Nancy Lord, a former Alaska State Writer Laureate (2008–2010), is the author of three short story collections, five books of literary nonfiction including Beluga Days and Early Warming, and the 2017 novel pH. Her writing focuses mainly on northern environmental and marine issues. She also edited the anthology Made of Salmon, teaches science writing for Johns Hopkins University, and is a regular book reviewer for the Anchorage Daily News. Photo by Stacy Studebaker
